Autumn Equinox

New Moon in Libra

September 29, 2008

The first day of Libra is the Fall equinox, one of two points in the year when the lengths of day and night are equal. Libra’s orientation is towards the external world and learning how to relate in objective ways. Autumn ushers in the dark season. From now until spring the nights are longer than the days. Throughout world mythology, the goddess of the grain, the autumn harvest, the Great Mother who sustains her species was known as Astarte , Ishtar by the Semites, Demeter in Greece and Ceres in Rome. Autumn is associated with maturity , harvest, death and the understanding of eventual rebirth. Just as the dying Sun is sure to return , so too, will the seeds buried deep into Earth Mother’s womb.

The glyph for Libra is a symbol of the setting Sun. The ancients thought it to be an altar to the gods of light. Sunset is a sacred time, the Elders tell us that when the sky turns orange the doors to the spirit world are open , the veil between two world’s are at it’s thinnest. This is when we begin the fire for the sacred sweat lodge ceremony. In Native Medicine Wheel, The sign Libra corresponds to the West which is  called the ‘looks within place’ a point of reflection and healing. Their Totem is the Grizzly Bear who retreats to the darkness of it’s cave to renew and heal itself.

With the New Moon in Libra this is one of the most favorable to look at our relationships with others through objective eyes. Do we attract relationships in our lives that are vital and sustain us , or do we attract others into our lives that devitalize us , or do you participate in relationships where you don’t belong. Like Kenny Rodgers says you have to know “when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. This New Moon has a lot of help from Mercury, Mars which can help to express and communicate our intentions within our relationships. This is also a powerful time to examine our relationship with ourselves. If we cannot love ourselves, relate to ourselves, or value ourselves we certainly aren’t going to be able to relate to another, understand their needs and love them. Libra needs to understand that self love; self worth is something that’s internally generated. Why are we so hung up on finding the significant other for fulfillment? Chinese proverb says “He, who looks to others for fulfillment, will never be fulfilled.
With Libra’s there can be a tendency towards over identification with relationships or others. Give up the notion of looking for someone or something outside of ourselves to fulfill our essential needs. Libra is ruled by Venus/Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty. We know from mythology that Aphrodite carried a large mirror around with her always to admire her own reflection. If we look at the glyph for Venus it does remind me of a hand mirror. So perhaps Venus has a lot to do with how we see ourselves, do we like what we see, and Venus/Libra is always concerned with personal appearance or looking good.

The gift of Libra’s has always been their ability to compromise to bring opposites together. Libra symbolized by the scales of Justice and balance.
They have a highly developed sense of fairness and objectivity. Libra is after all the only sign that’s neither human nor animal, it’s an inanimate object? As a Sun Sign Libra always found that quite curious? It may suggest that human (emotion) and animal (instinct) can never be completely objective.
Libra’s can identify with the rule “ treat others as you want them to treat you” and they are respectful and considerate of other people’s feelings and needs. The problem arises when they subordinate their own essential needs for the needs of others. Libra’s need  a sense of peace, harmony and balance in their lives and hate discord or conflict. They do need at times to assert themselves more directly and  let go of the idea peace at any price.

The myth of Tiresias the blind prophet has some relation with Libra. In myth because he has the favor of the goddess Hera (Juno),he is given the chance to observe a miracle. Two serpents coupling in the goddess sacred grove. He asks her which experiences the greater pleasure; and because she cannot answer, she grants him the boon of spending part of his life as a woman so he can experience both. At the ends of his period of transsexual initiation, he returns to his male form, and is called before Zeus (Jupiter)and Hera (Juno) and asked which experiences the greater pleasure-male or female. In typically Libra fashion he tries diplomacy, because he knows whichever answer he gives it’s going to offend somebody. So he finally tells the truth-that the female experiences the greater pleasure-where Zeus, furious at this insult to masculine vanity strikes him blind. NOW, blindness in Greek myth is often a symbol for inner sight. All the great prophets and bards are generally blind in one eye or both. How this relates to Libra of course is the polarity and experiencing of opposites.

Libra’s are actually Aries who went to charm school. And Venus ruled Libra is noted for both its grace and charm. They are the diplomats , mediators and negotiators of the zodiac. Because Libra is an air sign and may not be overtly emotional, but they are sensitive especially to their environmental surroundings. The need for beauty, art, music and esthetics are essential in order to maintain inner harmony, peace and balance.
Mercury makes its station and goes retrograde on the 24th makes it difficult to get straight answers from others so you may have to read between the lines. Avoid skirting around important decisions. The answers you seek will come from within. Jupiter and Pluto both made their stations in the second week of September the 8th and 9th respectively, and immediately Fannie May and Freddie Mac were taken over by regulators. Shortly thereafter several banks failed, and then we had the announcement of Lehman brothers and the fall of AIG. Many thought the expansion and optimism of Sagittarius would go on forever, but instead it turned out to be fool’s gold. Pluto made a quick hit back in January in Capricorn and is preparing for its 15 years journey into Capricorn this November. Its report card time, time for a reality check.

Mars squares the US Pluto on September 30, but this aspect can sometimes work early. This is an extremely powerful and potentially explosive dynamic
The potential for expanded terrorist activity and militant action at this time would accelerate the collapse and meltdown of the already weaken, fragile economic structures. The political attacks will become intensified for both Presidential candidates and the ---- is about to hit the fan.

Transiting Neptune conjuncts the US Moon creating deep disillusionment and sacrifice. The things that use to provide security are no longer viable. The dream homes for thousands are being foreclosed on leaving families displaced and homeless. For some the American dream is turning into the American nightmare. Looking at the Gemini rising chart Chiron (wounded healer) conjuncts the Moon and M.C. This reaffirms a deep wound to the soul (Moon) of the country, especially with security issues of housing and home foreclosures. Chiron on the MC, This is what we project to the outer world. Our national identity has been damaged through the eyes of the world whether we like it or not. Healing needs to take place at home and resurrect our essential core values as a country. United we stand, Divided we fall. In the word of Gandhi “Let us be the change we want the world to become” .

The Minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for you, not knowing
                   Where you were.
                   Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere
They’re in each other all along .
