Winter Solstice

New Moon in Capricorn
December 27, 2008
Winter Solstice has been celebrated in cultures the world over for thousands of
years. This is the start of the Solar New Year, the return of light and the rebirth
of the Sun. Most customs, lore and rituals associated with Christmas are actually
Winter Solstice celebrations of ancient pagan cultures.
The ancient festival from which we derive many of the traditional celebrations associated
with Midwinter is the Roman Saturnalia. The rituals of Midwinter were an assemblage
of fun, laughter and gift giving. This was the festival that we receive the idea
of giving gifts at Christmas and NOT from the gifts of the Magi as commonly supposed.
This year as the Sun makes its ingress into Capricorn (Winter Solstice) will conjunct
Pluto for the fist time in 248 years. The United States its Pluto return.
This is a powerful dynamic as we may be witnessing the death of America, as we have
known it. This could also imply the rebirth and transformation of a country rising
out of its ashes.
The chart for the Winter Solstice has the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Libra.
Teamwork and cooperation are essential on every level personal, social, and universal
if we’re going to survive the global crisis monetarily, technologically and
ecologically.
The New Moon in Capricorn falls on December 27th. New Moons are times of new beginnings,
planting new seeds and setting intentions. This is one of the best New Moons for
pursuing goals and making serious commitment towards success
And achievement. Capricorn’s are hard working, persevering and goal oriented.
Capricorn defines itself by the work it does and takes great pride in their accomplishments
and professionalism.
With the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto in Capricorn we may feel a
sense restriction, constriction initiating new projects or endeavors in our life.
Patience, perseverance and discipline will reward us in the long haul. The phrase
‘ Keep it real ‘ is the mantra for the next month. Time of a major reality
check especially in the areas of government and economic reform.
One of the wounds that seem to afflict many Capricorn’s is the wound of not
getting what they needed from their parents. The myth of the house of Atreus serves
as a powerful metaphor for Capricorn’s. The sins of the fathers passed on
to the son. The story begins with a father who was so bold as to boil his son and
serve him at a feast for the gods. This kind of outrage concluded the gods, must
be punished severely. Bringing the son back to life, the gods sparred him from the
curse that was to follow. The result was several generations of matricide, patricide,
infidelity and insanity and ultimately resolution. With Saturn (Karma) what goes
around comes around until the debt is paid.
Mars conjuncts Pluto on the 28th watch for power plays and power surges on the world
stage. New government controls may spark controversy and call for major reform.
Saturn turns retrograde on the 31st until May 16th, 2009. Time to review, and reprioritize
our strategies. The Sabian symbol reads: A ROYAL COAT OF ARMS ENRICHED WITH A PRECIOUS
STONE. The Saturn/Uranus opposition echoes the demand for change of old existing
structures that no longer serve the needs of the people in an efficient manner.
Universal health care will become a reality despite the resistance of conservative/reactionary
managed health care industry. In the words of Crosby, Stills and Nash, ‘It’s
been a long time coming’.
Jupiter makes its ingress into Aquarius for the first time in 12 years (1997) .
Have faith and believe in you’re visions. Be the change you want the world
to become. Opportunity emerges when you attach yourself to collective ideas and
work on altruistic and humanitarian values. Mercury turns retrograde on January
11th at 8 degrees of Aquarius. The Sabian Symbol reads: A BEAUTIFULLY GROWNED WAX
FIGIRE ON DISPLAY. Our minds go on vacation until February 1, 2009 when Mercury
makes its station at 22 degrees of Capricorn, I can see clearly now.
Full Moon in Cancer on January 11, 2009 at 21 degrees. This is also referred as
Crisis Moon. Crisis lunations occur when the Moon reaches its perigee (closest to
earth). Emotional reactions become super charged. The ancient Chinese had a wise
word for crisis. Wei-Chi, which means danger (Wei) and opportunity (Chi). The question
is not how to avoid danger, pain and change, but rather how do we understand and
use these periods in our lives creatively. The Full Moon in Cancer (Mother) opposite
the Sun in Capricorn (Father) brings illumination and urges us to make a commitment
and dedication at healing family wounds. This applies not to just our blood families,
but to our group or tribal families. Richard Bach says: Rarely do members one one’s
true family, share the same roof. Unless we have a home that heals our spirit, we
will never heal.
